Improve your Flexibility
Aside from the obvious cardio workout that you get, ballet dancing is a form of exercise that improves your flexibility through the stretching that you will do after each lesson.
This aids your overall well being allowing your ligaments and muscles to contract and expand effectively, and therefore prevent injury.
Plus you will be able to do things that you have not been able to do for a long time! Perhaps ever!
As you strengthen and stretch your body, you will feel less tense, and have improved posture.
What Do Classes Consist of?
All ballet dancing classes consist of barre work, centre work and dances. The barre work aims to warm up your body and focuses on stability of the feet and arms.
The use of the barre helps you to focus on correcting your balance, posture and allows you to concentrate on technique.
When you move to the centre, you will be given other strengthening core work and start moving into more movement based exercises.
Finally, the ballet dance classes will end with working on various routines.
Memory is an important aspect of ballet classes, so if you have trouble with remembering steps and routines, then ballet this is a good way of improving this.
Perfect practice makes perfect, come and join our Harlow ballet lessons to get started.
What Do you Need?
When you come to ballet classes, all you need is comfortable dancing gear, and ballet pumps.
These can either be leather or satin, although leather will last longer, and these should be attached with elastic or ribbon.
It is probably best for class work, to start out with leathers and elastics, and the split sole pumps are a great option if you want to enhance your pointing and foot work. You will also need to bring a bottle of water and a towel.
It is usually preferable that leggings or tights and a leotard are worn to class, so that the teacher can see what you are doing and correct the small things that are so vital in ballet.
Aside from the gear, you should take care to tie your hair up into a bun or a top knot of sorts.
This will keep the hair out of your face and prevent it from annoying you, but aside from this the neatness of your uniform and hair forms an integral part of ballet.
It falls to the discipline aspect of ballet, which is one of the reasons that ballet is so revered and special.
Practice Makes Perfect
One of the main reasons that people shy away from taking ballet lessons is that they feel like it is out of their depth.
While ballet is something that you should have ideally done from a young age, it is never too late to start and as with any sport or activity, practice makes perfect.
The more you practice and dance at home, the better you will become. You must also remember that it will take some time for you to get into the swing of things and see some improvement, but you should not give up and get disheartened.
It will come eventually, and one day you will be dancing around gracefully and beautifully!
For those who have done ballet before, perhaps as a child, and you have decided to pick it up again, you will find that it will come back pretty naturally.

How Long Are Harlow Ballet Classes?
To see any kind of improvement it is best to do ballet dancing at least twice a week, but three times is better. This goes for any age group, and for the younger dancers, classes are between 30 minutes to an hour.
Adult classes are also normally an hour, but can be longer for the more advanced dancers. Ballet classes are held regularly throughout the week in our Harlow ballet school, we strive to provide lessons for all ages and levels of ability.
The Cool Down and Stretching
Once you have completed your lesson, you should always stretch afterwards. During the class you will be given a cool down session, but this is generally not long enough, so you should always stretch more when you get home.
This will aid in your suppleness and flexibility, and prevent you from getting injured. You should take extra care to stretch your feet and ankles, as these are the parts of the body that usually take the most strain as a ballet dancer.
